Abstract
Due to their working conditions, fatigue is one of the most common failure modes in gears. Although several treatments are commonly used to improve the mechanical properties, their contribution is usually considered in a very conservative way based on standards, so their effectiveness and potential are not fully known yet. The aim of this work is to numerically evaluate the contribution of shot peening (SP) and case-hardening on the fatigue strength of gears under single tooth bending fatigue (STBF) conditions. This is the first part of a larger study, which will be completed with the experimental validation. The case study chosen is a gear of module 6, made of 16MnCr5 steel. Four conditions have been analysed: i) raw, ii) case-hardened, iii) SP, and iv) case hardened and SP. The SP and case-hardening treatments have been modelled in order to numerically estimate the fatigue strength of the four cases, considering the residual stresses of each case, in different load cases and using the multi-axial fatigue parameters.
