Abstract

The use of glass covers a wide range of structural applications, such as in the construction or the automotive sectors. Owning to its brittle behaviour, the tensile strength of glass is limited because of the existence of surface flaws. Thus, the glass strength is highly influenced by the surface damage. For this reason, glass is most often heat treated before using it as a structural material. The current tempering techniques lead to non-uniform cooling distributions on the surface causing residual stress inhomogeneities, which have a direct impact on the structural features of heat treated components. This work therefore presents a novel numerical methodology to predict the in-service behaviour of glass plates subjected to bending loads considering the residual stresses developed during the glass cooling process. To do so, a fluid-structure interaction numerical methodology to calculate the non-uniform residual stresses developed during the tempering process is presented. Similarly, a probabilistic-numerical model based on the generalised local model to address both, the residual stress pattern and the statistic nature of glass strength is proposed. The obtained results came into agreement with the performed experimental tests.
