Abstract

Drum-Buffer-Rope (DBR) is a key element within the Theory-of-Constraints (TOC), since it controls the scheduling of production order to the system. This sequence of orders is controlled by the schedule of the Drum. The existing literature has discussed extensively the validity and usefulness of DBR to manage productive system, anyhow it has been fo-cused on analytical approaches (mainly simulation) but lacking of empirical cases from the industry in the make-to-order and “V” plants. In this research, we present a systematic process to implement the first two steps of DBR, mainly focusing on the strategical impli-cations rather the operational perspective. Strategical means to stress the importance of the resource, which controls the launch and production rhythm - and therefore is a managerial key decision. Keywords: Drum–Buffer–Rope; Theory of Constraints; strategic decision.
