Abstract

Fatigue assessment in wave energy converters presents a significant challenge due to their wide array of operational conditions. This necessitates the adoption of more time-efficient techniques. While Rainflow counting is widely recognised for its reliability, its drawback lies in its time-consuming nature. In contrast, spectral methods offer a more efficient alternative. This paper aims to conduct a comprehensive fatigue assessment of a wave energy converter’s mooring system while delving into the influence of various operational conditions on total damage. The spectral method utilised for the analysis is Tovo-Benasciutti, with Rainflow damage used as a reference. Results underscore the reliability of spectral methods and highlight the critical importance of accurately representing the operational region, given its impact on overall damage.
